1 storyPolygon zkEVM was an Ethereum validity rollup designed for EVM-compatible smart contracts, zero-knowledge proofs, sequencer-based batching, and settlement through Ethereum. Polygon Labs completed the network's sunset on July 3, 2026; the sequencer no longer produces blocks, and ordinary Agglayer Bridge withdrawals are unavailable. This historical tag should cover the former Mainnet Beta, proof and bridge architecture, ecosystem migration, shutdown decisions, and the dedicated claims process for eligible externally owned account balances. Polygon PoS, other Polygon scaling products, and assets locked in third-party contracts require separate treatment because their recovery paths and operating status differ.
