Ethereum marked its 11th anniversary on July 30, highlighting its evolution from a nascent smart contract platform to the backbone of stablecoins, decentralized finance, and tokenized real-world assets. While the network now supports nearly $149 billion in stablecoins and over $15 billion in tokenized assets, its ability to capture value for ETH holders is facing new challenges as transaction fees decline and activity shifts to layer-2 networks.
Fee Compression and Value Capture
Recent data from DeFiLlama and RWA.xyz shows that Ethereum-based applications generated $8.56 million in total fees over a 24-hour period, but the mainnet itself accounted for only $734,000 in fees and $330,000 in protocol revenue. This drop in mainnet revenue is partly due to a sharp reduction in transaction fees: a 2026 academic study found that median mainnet fees fell from over $2 to under $0.02 between 2024 and early 2026, while median layer-2 fees dropped by more than 95%. Lower fees have made Ethereum more accessible, but they have also reduced the fee burn that once supported the "ultrasound money" narrative for ETH.
Debate Over ETH's Role
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has acknowledged the risk that ETH could lose its central role as value shifts to layer-2s and application tokens. He has outlined several strategies to reinforce ETH's position, including promoting ETH as the primary collateral asset, encouraging rollups to share economics with the base layer, supporting "based rollups" that settle directly to Ethereum, and increasing demand for data "blob" space. Joseph Lubin, another Ethereum co-founder, has argued for keeping base-layer fees low to drive adoption, suggesting that ETH's value will come from its monetary premium, staking demand, and network-wide collateral use. Others, like Etherealize's Vivek Raman, have described ETH as "productive money" that can serve as both a store of value and a yield-generating asset.
Rollup Fragmentation and Network Cohesion
Ethereum's original vision of a unified network extended by rollups is being tested as fast EVM-compatible chains proliferate, often connected by multisignature bridges that do not fully inherit Ethereum's security guarantees. In February, Buterin noted that the old model of seamless rollup integration no longer fits the current landscape. The Ethereum Foundation has responded by restructuring its organization, cutting 54 positions in June and focusing on protocol, access, user, community, and institutional layers. New independent nonprofits, Ethlabs and Ethereum Institutional, have launched to support research and institutional adoption.
Security and the Next Decade
Maintaining credible neutrality, censorship resistance, and independent verification remains a core challenge as Ethereum scales. The Foundation's Trillion Dollar Security initiative aims to address these issues by targeting higher throughput, native zkEVM verification, proposer-builder separation, and post-quantum security. The outcome will determine whether ETH becomes the foundational collateral for layer 1, layer 2s, tokenized assets, and staking, or whether most economic value accrues to rollups and application tokens, leaving ETH as an optional component.
As Ethereum's network matures, its fee and value-capture dynamics are drawing comparisons to other sectors facing similar economic pressures.
