MoonPay has introduced PayBox, a payment vault designed to let users of ChatGPT and Claude authorize cryptocurrency purchases, token swaps, and cross-chain transactions directly through AI-powered conversations. The product aims to streamline crypto payments and trading by integrating with popular AI assistants, while allowing users to maintain control over their funds throughout the process.
To use PayBox, individuals install the tool within ChatGPT or Claude, create an account, register a passkey, and connect a crypto wallet. Users can also add a payment card if they choose. Funding the vault is possible via an existing wallet or payment card, but only after MoonPay completes its identity verification process. According to the company, all wallet keys are protected using multi-party computation (MPC) and trusted execution environments (TEEs), with key shares distributed across hardware-isolated secure environments. This structure is intended to prevent any single device or party from moving funds independently.
AI Transaction Approval
Once PayBox is set up, users can prompt ChatGPT or Claude to prepare a transaction using natural language. The AI assistant generates the transaction details, but no funds move until the user approves the action with their registered passkey. For those seeking more automation, PayBox offers an autonomous mode, allowing the AI to execute transactions automatically within user-defined spending limits. Each passkey approval is valid for a single transaction, reducing the risk of unauthorized reuse if an approval is intercepted.
For card-based payments, PayBox uses Visa's agentic commerce protocol, which processes transactions without exposing or storing the underlying card number. Supported blockchains include Solana and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks such as Ethereum, Base, Hyperliquid, Arbitrum, and Polygon. Payment options extend to debit cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay, and PayPal. PayBox supports x402, an open payment protocol initially developed by Coinbase to enable AI agents to make internet-native payments.
