Linea settles with zk proofs and ETH-only gas, while Arbitrum and Optimism use fraud challenges and roughly seven-day official bridges, shaping DeFi depth, Superchain tools, and withdrawal risk for U.S. users

Ethereum users and developers choosing a Layer 2 still face a practical fork: validity proofs that finalize after on-chain verification, or optimistic designs that assume honesty until someone challenges a batch. Linea, Arbitrum, and Optimism all settle to Ethereum and charge L2 gas in ETH, yet they differ on proof models, withdrawal timing, native-token roles, and where liquidity and tooling concentrate.

For U.S. retail users, builders, and teams migrating DeFi positions, those differences affect bridge risk, onboarding friction, and which apps feel liquid enough to use day to day. None of the three is a universal default; each optimizes a different mix of finality style, ecosystem depth, and developer stack.

Proof Models Differ

Linea is a Type 2 zkEVM Layer 2 associated with Consensys. It executes EVM-compatible transactions off the main chain and posts zk-SNARK validity proofs to Ethereum. Finality for withdrawals through the official path depends on proof verification on L1 rather than a multi-day challenge period. Gas on Linea is paid only in ETH. The LINEA token is described as supporting incentives and a dual-burn design, not as the gas token.

Arbitrum, developed by Offchain Labs, is an Optimistic Rollup. Arbitrum One runs on the Nitro stack: execution happens offchain, compressed data and state roots land on Ethereum, and correctness relies on fraud proofs plus a dispute window. Optimism, advanced by OP Labs, follows a similar optimistic pattern after the Bedrock upgrade and the OP Stack design-offchain execution, onchain data availability, and fraud proofs. In both optimistic systems, batches are treated as valid unless challenged during the window.

Across all three networks, L2 gas remains denominated in ETH, keeping fee economics tied to Ethereum rather than replacing the base asset with a governance token. ARB and OP function mainly as governance and coordination tokens. LINEA is positioned for incentives, ecosystem funding, and a dual-burn flow in which a portion is burned against ETH activity and a larger share is bought back and burned as LINEA on L1, according to project descriptions of the mechanism.

Withdrawals and Bridges

Official bridge exits from Arbitrum One or Optimism to Ethereum typically take about seven days because of the challenge window. Faster third-party bridges can shorten the wait but introduce extra trust assumptions, fees, and smart-contract risk. Linea's standard withdrawal path completes after the zk proof is checked on L1, so timing tracks proof generation and verification rather than a fixed dispute period.

Users moving sizeable balances should treat bridge choice as a risk decision, not only a speed decision. Sequencer operation, bridge contracts, and any liquidity provider standing behind a fast exit all sit outside pure L1 settlement guarantees. U.S. users comparing options for treasury moves, DeFi exits, or exchange deposits need to weigh that delay-versus-trust trade-off explicitly.

Ecosystems and Tooling

Arbitrum has long concentrated deep DeFi liquidity and protocol variety, which matters for teams that need existing pools, established user flows, and the Nitro execution environment. Orbit-style deployments extend that stack for app-specific chains. Optimism's OP Stack underpins the Superchain thesis, where networks such as Base share tooling, upgrade patterns, and documentation aimed at multichain launches.

Linea's practical edge for many developers is proximity to Consensys products: MetaMask network defaults, Infura RPC access, and Linea Hub-style onboarding paths that reduce setup friction for EVM builders who already live in that toolchain. Corporate backing maps roughly to Consensys for Linea, Offchain Labs for Arbitrum, and OP Labs for Optimism, though day-to-day security still rests on Ethereum settlement, data availability, and the integrity of each rollup's contracts and operators.

All three inherit Ethereum's settlement layer and data-availability requirements. Linea emphasizes Type 2 zkEVM goals around EVM equivalence and tracking Ethereum upgrades. Arbitrum remains EVM-compatible and has expanded execution options such as Stylus for additional languages. Optimism packages rollup components as reusable OP Stack pieces for Superchain participants.

How Teams Choose

Selection usually turns on proof preference, withdrawal UX, token role, and ecosystem fit rather than a single benchmark. Teams that want validity proofs, Consensys integration, and an ETH-only fee market may lean Linea. Projects that need mature DeFi depth and Nitro may prefer Arbitrum. Builders targeting OP Stack standards, Superchain coordination, or Base adjacency often evaluate Optimism first.

Layer 2 activity remains a major share of Ethereum user transactions in public dashboards tracked by providers such as L2BEAT, which catalogs rollup stages, TVL, and risk frameworks for optimistic and validity systems. Exact TVL and fee rankings shift with markets, so any comparison should be checked against current explorer and analytics data before a migration or mainnet launch.

Optimistic rollups and zkEVMs both compress execution off Ethereum while posting enough data for verification, but they encode different security and latency assumptions. Fraud-proof systems minimize immediate proving cost and accept a challenge delay; validity-proof systems pay for cryptographic proofs so that accepted state transitions do not rely on a watchful challenger. Bridge design, sequencer decentralization roadmaps, and governance-token rights sit on top of that base trade-off and continue to evolve as each stack ships upgrades.
