Ondo Finance has launched three tokenized portfolios based on BlackRock strategies. But only non-US investors who finish onboarding can redeem tokens directly. US users are limited to trading on secondary markets.
Ondo Finance has released three new on-chain portfolio tokens that follow investment strategies built by BlackRock. But there is a major catch for US investors: they cannot redeem these tokens directly. Only non-US investors who pass all eligibility checks can redeem with Ondo. US users have to use secondary markets if they want to sell their tokens.
Redemption barriers
Ondo's Intelligent Portfolios launched with three tokens-BLKHIon, BLKDIGon, and BLKGRWon-offering on-chain exposure to BlackRock-developed strategies, but only non-U.S. investors can redeem directly.
Only eligible non-US investors who complete identity and anti-money-laundering checks can mint or redeem directly. The onboarding process screens for US-person status, restricted countries, and other barred categories. If you do not qualify, your only option is to transfer tokens on-chain to someone else, if allowed by your jurisdiction and the platform. US investors cannot redeem tokens with Ondo. They must find a buyer in the secondary market, which may not always be possible at the price or time they want.
Portfolio mechanics
Ondo's tokens track weighted baskets that include Ondo Stocks, which follow equities and exchange-traded funds. Ondo sets up and rebalances these portfolios on a set schedule. BlackRock's role is limited to providing the initial model allocations. BlackRock Fund Advisors do not manage the on-chain portfolios or make investment decisions for token holders. They are not required to update their models after delivery. Ondo decides how and when to apply any changes to the portfolio. Over time, the on-chain product may drift from the original BlackRock model.
The Ondo Intelligent Portfolios are structured as on-chain tokens that provide economic exposure to baskets of tokenized assets, rather than direct ownership. This approach allows for 24/7 transferability but introduces unique regulatory and liquidity considerations for investors.
Legal and regulatory implications
Each portfolio token is a separate security issued by Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited. Tokens can be held or transferred more widely, but redemption is tightly controlled by eligibility rules. Ondo's setup shows how complex the rules are for tokenized securities, especially for US investors who face extra restrictions. The company's FAQ and product terms stress that holding a token does not mean you can redeem it. All onboarding steps must be finished before you can interact directly with the issuer.
This setup is different from other recent crypto market moves, like the Moscow Exchange's launch of perpetual crypto futures for qualified investors, as reported earlier. While some international venues are opening up access to crypto-linked products, US investors still face regulatory and operational barriers with tokenized securities and on-chain investment products.
Market context
Ondo's launch comes as tokenization of real-world assets and traditional investment strategies is picking up in the crypto sector. Ondo's model separates economic exposure from direct ownership or fund participation. This shows how tokenized products are changing and how rules shape who can use them. For US investors, not being able to redeem directly with the issuer adds complexity and risk, especially in volatile or illiquid markets.
As of launch, Ondo has not shared figures for total assets under management or trading volume for these new tokens. The products are built to track diversified baskets, but real liquidity and secondary market pricing will depend on user demand and whether eligible non-US participants are willing to mint and redeem. Without direct redemption, US holders may see wider spreads and less predictable exit options than with traditional investments.
Tokenized portfolios like Ondo's show the trade-offs between on-chain access and regulatory compliance. Blockchain lets users transfer tokens at any time and get exposure to different strategies. But legal limits and eligibility checks can sharply reduce practical use for some groups. For US investors, knowing the difference between holding a transferable token and having a direct redemption right is key to judging both liquidity and risk in these new products.
