MultiversX will temporarily pause new transactions as it rolls out its Supernova upgrade, aiming to cut block times by 90% and overhaul consensus. Node operators face a tight deadline to update software or risk falling out of sync.

MultiversX is about to put its blockchain on pause-literally. In a move that will test both its infrastructure and its validator community, the network will stop accepting new transactions for roughly 24 minutes as it activates the Supernova upgrade, a sweeping overhaul designed to make the chain ten times faster. The stakes are high: any validator running outdated software risks being left behind as the network accelerates into a new era of block production and settlement speed.

Critical Upgrade Window

The Supernova upgrade is scheduled for September 10, targeting epoch 2233 and round 32157661 as the activation point. During this transition, MultiversX will cut block times from six seconds to just 600 milliseconds. The upgrade also restructures the consensus mechanism, allowing validators to vote on blocks while transaction execution happens in parallel. This removes a key bottleneck that previously limited throughput, according to documentation published by MultiversX.

To prepare, more than 5,000 node operators have been given a nine-day window to migrate to the new software. As of September 1, public network data showed that 95.35% of the 5,171 nodes were still running the old v1.11.11.0 release, with no visible signs of Supernova migration. While this does not mean the network is behind schedule, it sets a clear baseline for measuring upgrade progress as the deadline approaches.

Temporary Transaction Freeze

Once the upgrade process begins, MultiversX will halt acceptance of new pool transactions for approximately 240 rounds-about 24 minutes under the old six-second block time. Transactions already in flight will be cleared, but any new submissions during this window will remain queued until the faster network resumes processing. This deliberate pause is intended to ensure a clean transition and prevent synchronization errors as the new consensus rules take effect.

Validators who fail to upgrade risk producing blocks that diverge from the majority chain, potentially losing synchronization and missing out on rewards. The network's guidance makes it clear: old and new binaries can coexist before activation, but once Supernova is live, outdated nodes will be incompatible with the new transaction logic.

Speed, Finality, and Compatibility

Supernova's changes go beyond raw speed. The upgrade is designed to preserve deterministic finality, with intra-shard finality times dropping below 250 milliseconds and cross-shard settlement shrinking from about 18 seconds to roughly 2.4 seconds. Despite these changes, MultiversX will keep epoch length, addresses, keys, and balances backward compatible, minimizing disruption for users and developers.

The network's EGLD token has shown renewed activity ahead of the upgrade. According to CryptoSlate, EGLD briefly crossed the $4 mark for the first time since May, reaching $4.05 before pulling back. While price action is only one indicator, it reflects heightened attention as the upgrade window opens.

Coordination Risks and Market Context

The real test will be whether node operators coordinate in time. If a significant share of validators lags behind, the network could face operational headaches as faster processing collides with unsynchronized nodes. This scenario echoes the coordination challenges seen in other major blockchain upgrades, such as the feature freeze for Bitcoin Core v32, where delayed integration forced a shift in focus to bug fixes and highlighted the importance of timely node updates.

For MultiversX, the Supernova upgrade is a calculated gamble. The technical ambition is clear, but the outcome depends on whether thousands of independent operators can move in lockstep. If successful, the network will set a new bar for block production speed among major layer-1 chains. If not, the consequences will be immediate and visible on-chain. This is the kind of high-stakes infrastructure moment that separates robust networks from those still learning to coordinate at scale.

Blockchain upgrades of this scale expose the trade-offs between speed, security, and decentralization. While faster block times and reduced settlement latency can improve user experience and open new use cases, they also demand tighter coordination among validators and increase the risk of network splits if upgrades are not universally adopted. For users and developers, the promise of backward compatibility may ease the transition, but the underlying complexity remains. As more networks pursue aggressive performance targets, the operational burden on node operators-and the consequences of falling behind-will only grow.
