A proposed change to Ethereum's staking model could dramatically reduce or even eliminate the network's native staking yield as the amount of staked ETH grows, forcing large holders-including corporate treasuries like SharpLink-to rely more heavily on volatile DeFi strategies and variable fee income. The proposal, known as EIP-8363, is under consideration for a future network upgrade but has not yet been approved or scheduled for mainnet deployment.

How EIP-8363 Would Reshape Staking Rewards

EIP-8363 introduces a mechanism that would gradually burn a larger share of consensus rewards as the total amount of staked ETH increases. According to the proposal, once staking participation reaches 60.25 million ETH-about 49.5% of the modeled total supply-the net consensus yield would fall to zero. This threshold is not a fixed ratio but serves as a reference point for when native staking rewards would be fully offset by the burn. The reduction would be phased in over 548 days, divided into 64 steps, if the proposal is adopted as part of Ethereum's Hegotá upgrade.

As of August 8, data from Beaconcha.in and Etherscan showed approximately 41.18 million ETH staked out of a total supply of 120.68 million ETH, representing a staking ratio of about 34%. These figures are subject to change and highlight that the impact of EIP-8363 would begin well before the zero-yield threshold is reached, as the tapering mechanism would start compressing rewards earlier in the process.

Implications for Corporate Treasuries Like SharpLink

SharpLink, a public company managing a significant ETH treasury, has promoted its stock as offering "yield generation above native staking rates." Its annual filings identify staking, trading, liquidity provision, and other return-seeking activities as part of its strategy. If EIP-8363 is implemented, the company's ability to rely on predictable staking rewards would diminish, increasing its dependence on more variable sources of income such as priority transaction fees, maximal extractable value (MEV), and DeFi protocols. These alternatives can offer higher returns but also introduce additional risks, including smart-contract vulnerabilities, liquidity constraints, and market volatility.

SharpLink's planned Galaxy SharpLink Onchain Yield Fund, as described in a May SEC filing, would allocate $100 million from its ETH treasury and $25 million from Galaxy to on-chain DeFi strategies. However, as of the company's June 22 prospectus, these commitments remained nonbinding and the fund had not yet launched. The shift away from native staking yield would make the success of such active strategies-and the associated risk management-more critical for large ETH holders.

Broader Market and Policy Context

The debate over Ethereum's staking rewards is not limited to corporate treasuries.
