Ethereum led digital asset gains in July, fueled by $365 million in U.S. ETF inflows and renewed corporate accumulation, but on-chain data suggests the market has yet to confirm a lasting reversal against Bitcoin

Ethereum outperformed Bitcoin in July, driven by a surge in U.S. spot ETF inflows and renewed interest from corporate treasuries. According to CryptoSlate, Ethereum rose 19% during the month, peaking near $1,970 before settling around $1,868. In contrast, Bitcoin gained 8% but struggled to break above $65,000, resulting in the ETH/BTC ratio climbing above 0.030 for the first time in three months before easing back. This shift has prompted speculation that capital is rotating back into Ethereum after nearly a year of lagging performance.

ETF Inflows and Corporate Accumulation

U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs attracted $365.17 million in net inflows in July, their strongest showing of the year, according to SoSoValue. By comparison, Bitcoin ETFs saw $172.43 million in net inflows, marking their weakest month since launching in January 2024. The turnaround for Ethereum products follows more than $1 billion in outflows over the previous two months. The launch of the Morgan Stanley Ethereum Trust (MSSE), which gathered about $20 million in assets in its first days, added to the momentum. While MSSE remains small relative to established ETH ETFs, Morgan Stanley's distribution network could broaden access to traditional wealth-management clients, and its 0.14% fee intensifies competition among ETH products.

Corporate treasury activity also favored Ethereum. BitMine, the largest corporate holder of Ether, increased its holdings from 5.70 million ETH at the end of June to 5.79 million ETH by July 26, though the pace of accumulation slowed. Meanwhile, Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, made no new purchases in July, instead focusing on cash reserves and preferred securities. This divergence left Ethereum with continued institutional accumulation and stronger ETF inflows, while Bitcoin's largest treasury buyer paused its activity.

On-Chain Signals Remain Cautious

Despite the renewed momentum, on-chain indicators suggest Ethereum's rally may not yet mark a durable market bottom against Bitcoin. The ETH/BTC ratio remains 13% lower year-to-date and about 73% below its 2017 high of 0.11, according to TradingView. While the ratio's stabilization near 0.0296 has halted its decline from multiyear lows, it has not reversed Ethereum's broader underperformance relative to Bitcoin.

Valuation metrics tracked by CryptoQuant show the ETH/BTC market-value-to-realized-value (MVRV) ratio has dropped to 0.65 from 0.95 in August 2025, indicating much of the premium that preceded Ethereum's decline has dissipated. However, previous cycle bottoms, such as those in 2019 and early 2025, only formed after the MVRV ratio fell below 0.45. Exchange flow data tells a similar story: the ratio of ETH to Bitcoin deposits on trading platforms has fallen from above 1.5 last August to about 0.8, suggesting relative selling pressure has eased but remains above the levels seen at prior market reversals.

Market Context and Historical Patterns

For Ethereum's July momentum to translate into a broader reversal, the ETH/BTC pair would likely need to establish support above 0.030 while valuation and exchange-flow metrics move closer to historical bottoming ranges. Until then, the data points to a recovery from depressed levels rather than a confirmed cyclical floor. This dynamic echoes patterns seen in other digital assets, where derivatives activity and spot market flows can diverge, as highlighted in EgonCoin's coverage of XRP's liquidity risks when derivatives outpaced spot trading volume (see analysis of XRP's market structure).

According to CryptoSlate, Ethereum's 19% gain in July outpaced Bitcoin's 8% rise, with the ETH/BTC ratio climbing above 0.030 for the first time since April. U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs recorded $365.17 million in net inflows, while Bitcoin ETFs saw $172.43 million. BitMine increased its Ether holdings by 90,000 ETH during July, while Strategy made no new Bitcoin purchases. The ETH/BTC MVRV ratio fell to 0.65, but previous market bottoms occurred only after this metric dropped below 0.45.

ETF inflows and on-chain data are increasingly used by analysts to gauge market sentiment and potential turning points in digital asset cycles. While strong ETF demand can signal renewed institutional interest, on-chain metrics such as realized value ratios and exchange flows provide additional context for whether a rally is likely to be sustained. For investors and users, understanding the interplay between these signals is essential for assessing risk and opportunity in volatile crypto markets.
