Greenlane Holdings' crypto treasury shrank to $16.4 million in Q2 2026 after Berachain's BERA token lost nearly 77% of its value this year, leaving the company with a $53.8 million unrealized loss on its digital asset position.

Greenlane Holdings, a former cannabis accessories distributor that pivoted to digital assets, reported a sharp decline in the value of its crypto treasury after Berachain's BERA token lost nearly three-quarters of its market price since January. According to a regulatory filing, Greenlane ended the second quarter of 2026 holding 81.3 million BERA and BERA-equivalent tokens, valued at $16.4 million as of June 30. This position was built at a cost of $70 million, leaving the company with an unrealized loss of $53.8 million, or 76.6% below its purchase price.

Token Accumulation Amid Decline

Despite the ongoing price drop, Greenlane increased its BERA holdings during the first half of the year. The company held 77.7 million BERA and equivalents at the end of March, meaning it acquired an additional 3.6 million tokens between April and June. BERA's price had briefly exceeded $1.20 earlier in 2026 but fell to approximately $0.146 by the end of June, according to the company's disclosure. Greenlane's decision to continue accumulating BERA as the market value declined highlights the risks of concentrated treasury strategies in volatile digital assets.

Financial Impact and Revenue

The steep drop in BERA's price led Greenlane to record a $19.1 million noncash fair-value loss on its digital assets for the quarter, making it the largest single factor in the company's $24.8 million net loss for Q2. While the company generated $309,000 in revenue from staking and yield activities tied to its BERA holdings, this income was dwarfed by the scale of the unrealized losses. Greenlane has not announced any changes to its treasury management approach following these results.

Strategic Shift and Market Context

Greenlane's move into digital assets followed a $110.7 million private placement completed in October 2025, after which it designated BERA as its primary treasury reserve asset. The company's experience reflects the broader risks faced by firms that allocate significant capital to a single, highly volatile token. As the crypto market continues to evolve, other companies have also been forced to reconsider their digital asset strategies in response to shifting valuations and regulatory scrutiny. For example, some firms have pursued acquisitions to diversify their business models, such as eToro's plan to expand its U.S. equities presence through the purchase of TradeZero, as discussed in recent coverage of eToro's acquisition strategy.

As of June 30, 2026, BERA was trading at $0.146, down 75.9% from the start of the year. Greenlane's 81.3 million BERA and BERA-equivalent tokens represented a significant concentration risk, with the fair value of its crypto treasury falling from a $70 million cost basis to just $16.4 million. The company's $19.1 million noncash loss on digital assets was the largest contributor to its $24.8 million net loss for the quarter, while staking and yield activities generated $309,000 in revenue during the same period.

When companies hold large positions in a single cryptocurrency, they expose themselves to significant market and liquidity risks. Unlike diversified portfolios, concentrated holdings can amplify the impact of price swings, especially in tokens with limited trading volume or thin liquidity. Unrealized losses may not affect cash flow immediately, but they can weigh heavily on financial statements and investor confidence. For firms considering digital assets as treasury reserves, understanding the volatility, liquidity, and regulatory environment of each token is essential to managing risk and maintaining operational flexibility.
