FG Nexus has exited its Ethereum holdings at a steep loss, redirecting over $60 million in cash proceeds into mobile home park investments after earning minimal staking rewards. The move highlights the risks of digital asset treasury strategies.

FG Nexus, a Nasdaq-listed merchant bank formerly known as Fundamental Global, has fully liquidated its Ethereum holdings less than a year after launching a digital asset treasury strategy, according to a recent SEC filing. The company's decision to exit crypto comes after it recorded a $45.2 million loss from its discontinued digital asset operations, with only $144,000 in staking revenue generated during the first half of the year.

Ethereum Exit and Financial Impact

The company's August 12 SEC filing confirms that all digital assets were sold before June 30, leaving no cryptocurrency on the balance sheet at quarter-end. FG Nexus had previously accumulated more than 50,000 ETH at its peak, but began unwinding its position amid a broader market downturn that pressured digital asset treasuries. The reported $45.2 million loss includes a $41.2 million realized loss on ETH, $2.8 million in impairment charges on digital intangibles, and $1.8 million in general and administrative expenses, partially offset by a $398,000 gain on digital intangibles and the modest staking income.

Despite the scale of the loss, the ETH liquidation returned significant liquidity to FG Nexus. The company reported $61 million in cash proceeds from ETH sales in the first half of the year, with an additional $15 million receivable from digital asset sales as of June 30, which was collected in July. These figures represent gross sale proceeds, not profits, and underscore the volatility and risk associated with holding large crypto treasuries.

Staking Yields Fail to Offset Losses

FG Nexus's experience highlights the limitations of staking as a risk mitigation tool for corporate crypto treasuries. The $144,000 in staking rewards earned during the first half of the year amounted to just 0.3% of the total loss from the discontinued digital asset operation. This outcome mirrors challenges faced by other companies with significant crypto exposure, as staking yields have not been sufficient to counteract market-driven losses. For context, other firms such as Trump Media have also faced complex risk scenarios with their digital asset holdings, as explored in EgonCoin's coverage of Bitcoin treasury management and options risk.

Strategic Pivot to Real Estate

Following the crypto exit, FG Nexus's board has shifted its focus to real estate, specifically land-lease manufactured housing properties. In July, the company announced plans to establish a subsidiary dedicated to acquiring and operating mobile home parks, and is evaluating a potential combination with FG Communities to expand into income-producing affordable housing. The company's chairman and CEO, Kyle Cerminara, has described manufactured housing as offering durable cash flow and long-term demand, but the proposed acquisition remains under review by a special committee and is not yet finalized.

FG Nexus's move away from digital assets reflects a broader trend among companies reassessing the risks and rewards of holding volatile cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets. The company's experience underscores the importance of liquidity management, risk assessment, and the limitations of staking as a hedge against market downturns.

According to the company's SEC filings, FG Nexus reported a consolidated net loss of approximately $56.9 million for the first half of the year, with the discontinued digital asset operation accounting for the majority of that figure. The company's pivot to real estate marks a significant change in strategy, with future performance likely to depend on the execution of its new business model and the stability of cash flows from property investments.

Staking on Ethereum allows holders to earn rewards by locking up their ETH to help secure the network, but the value of those rewards is subject to both token price volatility and protocol-level changes. For companies, staking can provide incremental yield, but it does not eliminate the risk of large unrealized or realized losses if the underlying asset declines in value. As more firms experiment with digital asset treasuries, the FG Nexus case illustrates the need for careful risk management and a clear understanding of the trade-offs involved.
